Up and herding in three steps

  1. Before you start: herdr on the PC, and Tailscale on the PC and the phone, signed in to the same tailnet.

Omarchy friendlyOn Omarchy it is one plugin: an icon in the bar that switches the daemon on and off; right-click → Pair phone shows the QR. No terminal.

  2. Install the daemon

sheepdogd is a small Rust daemon that sits next to herdr. It reads the herd every 1.5 s, turns status changes into events and serves them on port 8799.

    $ curl -fsSL https://sheepdog.leonavas.com/install.sh | sh
    installing sheepdogd…
    service enabled, listening on :8799
  3. Pair with a QR

Run sheepdogd pair and point the phone camera at the code. It carries the host name, its tailnet address and a token, and the app saves the host. Pair each PC the same way.

    $ sheepdogd pair
    scan with the phone camera
    sheepdog://pair?name=devbox&…
  4. Herd from your phone

Every agent on every paired PC lands in one list, grouped by workspace. Finished and blocked ones sink to the bottom, next to your thumb. Tap one to read along, answer, or nudge it.

What the dog does

A thin layer over herdr. herdr owns the agents; Sheepdog watches them and lets you nudge.

Answer from the notification

An agent finishes: you get a push with a reply field, so the next request goes out without opening the app. An agent asks: Enter and Esc sit right on the notification. Pick how loud each agent is, from silent to an alarm that barks until you look, and high-priority agents remind you if you leave them hanging.

  • The whole herd, by urgency

All agents on all paired PCs in one list: blocked, then finished, then working. Filter by attention, swipe a card to mark it seen.

  • Live chat and output

Read the conversation as it streams: tool calls, markdown tables, links and images the agent mentions. See how full the context window is.

  • Prompts and quick keys

Send a prompt, or tap Enter, Esc, 1/2/3, arrows and Ctrl+C. Questions arrive as a card with their options, ready to pick.

  • Spawn new agents

Pick a folder from favorites, recents or by browsing, choose a workspace or tab, the agent kind and a first prompt.

  • Priority, alerts and notes

Low, normal or high priority, a notification level and a note per agent. They live in the daemon, so every phone sees the same.

  • Many PCs, one herd

Pair every machine, or let one daemon reach the others through herdr machine add. Switch the active host from the avatar.

Anything else in herdr

Every other agent, and plain terminals too, still shows up in the herd with its status, live output, quick keys and prompts.

Install

Requires herdr on the PC and Tailscale on the PC and the phone, on the same tailnet.

Omarchy easiest

Install Sheepdog from the Omarchy plugin marketplace (Omarchy menu → plugins). It installs sheepdogd, enables the service and puts an icon in the bar: brown when on, white when off, click to toggle. Right-click it and pick Pair phone to show the QR. No terminal needed after that.

The plugin on GitHub

Any Linux or macOS

One line installs the daemon and starts it. Then pair.

curl -fsSL https://sheepdog.leonavas.com/install.sh | sh
sheepdogd pair

The phone

Android. Install the APK from the releases page, open it, scan the pairing QR.

  • No cloud in the middle

The phone talks straight to your daemon over Tailscale. There is no Sheepdog server, no account, nothing to sign up for.

  • Token on every request

Tailnet clients must send the token generated on first run; anything else gets a 403. Only loopback is trusted without it.

  • Push without a push service

The app keeps a WebSocket to each host and raises the notifications itself. No Firebase, no relay holding your prompts.

  • Open source

Daemon and app are on GitHub. Read what runs on your machine before you run it.

Questions

What is herdr?

herdr is a terminal multiplexer built for AI coding agents: it runs Claude Code, Codex and friends in panes and workspaces and knows when each one is working, done or blocked. Sheepdog reads that and puts it on your phone.

Do I need Tailscale?

Yes. The daemon only answers your tailnet, so the phone reaches the PC from anywhere without opening a port to the internet. Install Tailscale on both and sign in to the same tailnet.

Is there an iPhone app?

Not today. Sheepdog is Android only. The protocol is documented, so another client is possible.

Can it watch more than one PC?

Yes. Install the daemon on each PC and pair it as another host, or register the other machines with herdr machine add and they show up through the local daemon. Notifications cover every host.

Which agents does it support?

Sheepdog reads the chat and the model of Claude Code, Codex, Cursor CLI (cursor-agent) and Antigravity sessions on the daemon's machine. Any other agent or terminal in herdr still shows up with live output, quick keys and prompts.

Can I answer without opening the app?

Yes. A finished agent's notification has a reply field for the next request; a blocked one has Enter and Esc. Open the app when the question needs more than that.

Where do priorities and notes live?

In the daemon, keyed to the agent's pane, so they survive /clear and agent restarts and every paired phone sees the same settings.
